Successful
Website Promotion
Now, what
about your other options for Web site promotion? You've still got a lot
of doors open to you, so you should take advantage of as many methods
as possible to keep those hits coming in.
Banner
Exchanges While
the majority of banner advertising may be done by the big players
in the Internet market, there is also a sub-sector for the smaller
players like us, as well. Banner Exchanges are a type of banner
advertising program, which could basically be described by the
old saying of "One hand washes
the other". In a banner
advertising program, you create a banner which will be displayed on other
people's Web sites, and at the same time, you display a banner on your
site for other people. It is a rewarding system as well, given the fact
that the more people click on banners which are located on your site,
the more times your banner is displayed on other sites. In essence, the
more success you have in getting users to click banners from your site,
the more success you'll have in promoting your site as well. Although
it may seem like a paradox, it is quite true. The one thing
to watch for when becoming a member of a banner exchange is the ratio
at which they display your banner, in relation to how many hits you send
through. An average may be around a 1:2 ratio, while at better banner
exchanges, you may find better terms. For example, ours (no arrogance
intended) has a 2:3 ratio, giving members more rewards for sending click-throughs. E-mail & Newsgroup
Trailers How many
e-mail messages or newsgroup postings do you make in a day? Do you attach
a 'trailer' message to your messages? If not, you could be missing one
of the best methods of spreading the word about your site. A simple
trailer message at the bottom of your e-mail after your name, that is
inserted automatically by the mailer program will go a long way in bringing
new visitors. Something like... "For
the World's Best Widgets!"
http://www.widget.com/ Simple
but effective. This is especially true of newsgroup posting, where there
is the potential that hundreds or thousands of people will read the message. Newsgroup
Postings Newsgroups
are a marketers dream, which is one reason why we see so much spam floating
around the Usenet circle. Messages are posted and read by millions of
people daily, and then re-read them through archives such as DejaNews.
As well, newsgroups are specifically classified according to interest.
It has virtually taken all the work out of market and demographic research. By
announcing your site though a newsgroup posting, you have the opportunity
to reach a multitude of people through just one posting. On the other
hand, you have the potential to infuriate that same group of people by
posting in the wrong manner. Newsgroup users have never been known for
their patience, and flame-wars occur often across the Usenet. On
the bright side, there are specific newsgroups which exist for the sole
purpose of announcing your site to the world. On the negative side, these
groups aren't the most frequented destinations on Usenet. By looking for
a group which falls into the same interest category as your site falls
into though, you may be able to gain a complete audience just through
a posting to them. The important thing is to do it right. This includes
making sure that your posting is at the least, informative and non-commercial
sounding. The best method is to research these groups for a short period
of maybe a week, before you plan on posting. See how other members of
the group either post or react to postings similar to the one you'd like
to make. Learn from their mistakes. Then, don't repeat them when you make
your posting the group. One
posting should be enough, if you've done your marketing correctly.
Whatever you do, don't spam the newsgroup with multiple messages
that all contain the same thing. This will invite a plethora of
hate mail and postings in your direction, doing little to boost
the popularity of your site. Again though, when done correctly,
Usenet can be your friend. Show
